2. Wow what an interesting thought provoking topic. As a newbie (2 popup trailers and now a 4 month old travel trailer owner), here’s my logic. I have my brake cable longer then the safety chains. If were to do something boneheaded like not put the safety pin in and the trailer were to pop off the ball, the chains become taut and over take. I then would engage the trailer brake through the electric harness and then start pushing my truck brake pedal. The odds of the chains breaking or coming off because I forgot are really slim I think. So it pops off the ball, brakes through harness do to some tongue/ball failure, then the back up is the trailer brake cable because of a chain mishap. Make the brake cable too short and you have only that as the option. I like having 2 systems in place. 2 is 1 and 1 is none.

3. Id like to know how likely it is for a hitch to become separated from the truck? Cars i can understand but trucks…im not so sure its likely.

4. Most comprehensive video on this topic I’ve found. Thx. This may have been addressed somewhere already: on the breakaway cable, I prefer a clear jacket so that any corrosion of the cable can be more easily seen. Probably not an issue as long as you are replacing the cable regularly. The original cable on my travel trailer corroded to the point that it separated by moderate hand tugging.

5. I found this video because, as a European, any trailer has to use a brake cable and I have seen so many videos of trailers running away from their cars that I wondered if this is just not a thing in the U.S.
   Or if all of them did it wrong.

   I guess all of them did it wrong in these videos, and could even have done more if they knew what they were doing.
